Yeps, got the full picture now; was most scared that our Power8 lpars with kernel 3.10 would have needed full re-install (instead of lpm) when moving to Power9, but now all good ☺

Yep.
Both RHEL 7.5 LE for Power8 and RHEL-Alt 7.5 LE for Power9 will run fine in a Power9 PowerVM LPAR.
The Power8 base will come up in p8compat mode - your example.
The Power9 base will come up in P9 mode.
Yes... the RHEL-Alt 7.5 version is *specifically* intended for Power9 bare-metal and KVM host support.
That bare-metal support enables Nvidia Volta NVLink2 support.
