We recently successfully sniff-tested a relatively modern tree 
(v2.4-174-g7f90365d) with DD2.1 processors, and while it wasn't an 
extensive test, it booted.

We really don't have any means to accept any feature patches on 
backlevel trees, so it's imperative that you rebase those to the latest 
upstream master
