Thank your response. I had uncommented the text line "tmpfs /var/volatile tmpfs defaults 0 0" 
in the file "/etc/fstab". The OpenBMC system runs in an emergency mode. User root is able to login
the system.

I checked that the file "/etc/shadow" and the dirent "/etc/pam.d" exist.
