That's fine..  Can you change arch/ppc/boot/simple/head.S to something like:

/*
 * Determine CPU type
...
	bge	_setup_L2CR
#endif
	b	_setup_6xx

If this works, cat /proc/cpuinfo and tell me the PVR of your G4.
