es1371 driver just make noise

I am working trying to get an es1371 device driver working on MontaVista
port of linux to a IBM405gp.

The playback works ok, but when I try to record, I just get noise.  Yes,
I put in the flushes but this did not seem to make a difference.  Does
anybody have sound card working on and PPC embedded linux?  If so, which
one?
