2.2.9 compile problem (and 2.2.10-pre1)

Ok.  2.2.10-pre1 is out right now, and doesn't seem to have the needed fix
for ppc.  If no one volunteers to patch this (i'll wait a few hrs <g>)
I'll give it a shot and send to Cort/Linus.
