netatalk for glibc2

has anybody had success in compiling netatalk for the pre linuxppc 5
release?  checking the ftp site at ftp.linuxppc.org, it seems that the
number of packages is rapidly approaching a point where the bemefits of
upgrading seem to outweigh the bemefits of stayiing with R4.  This is one
of the critical packages _I_ need to upgrade.  Any thoughts?
