Just to report, I could successfully install to a retail model with
the lubuntu 12.10 quantal alternate CD (link below).

I used the 'install-powerpc64' option.  On the first try the installer
hung just after asking for the hostname.  The second try was successful,
and even created a usable /etc/kboot.conf.
