If it works and you are satisfied, then there is no reason to update,
but you will find it difficult to get support with old versions.

I think either Fedora 12 will be easiest for you. Current Debian
can be installed, and Ubuntu should be installable.

You need to check with the YDL support.

I can manage my Sony Walkman, but I don't know about other devices.
Some use proprietary formats that are not supported. Anyway, this
list is not for general Linux support, you'll need to look elsewhere.
