Just as a note, you cannot change video modes while X is
running.  It can't handle that.  You need to exit X,
change modes, then restart X.

You don't mention if you connect with HDMI or DVI. Try
broadcast (720p) with HDMI, and VESA modes with DVI.

Did you try passing an option like 'video=720p' on kernel
boot (from the bootloader)?

What does petitboot do when you change modes?
