Thanks for the tips.

Having spent today researching this I think there are a couple of issues
at work here.

The Xorg problem looks like it's due to something breaking input device
setup in the Xorg server [0] in just the last few days. I'm pretty sure
this one will be solved soon.

I haven't looked deeper into the boot splash problem yet, and have just
disabled it for now in kboot.conf.

It is amazing how broken things can get in just a few short days ;)
