I gave a quick read to the configure.ac, ppu and spu are supposed to be
standard alias and we distributors should hack our way to provide them
or maybe would be more sensible start using what are supposedly the full
strings as in

spu-elf-

powerpc{,64}-{something,unknown}-linux-gnu-
