Recovering from kernel hangs

Is there any way to recover from a kernel hang with Yaboot? I've read
about the printk messages being stored in RAM on some embedded devices
and they can be accessed via the bootloader. Is there any technique for
doing this? I'm trying to get KMS working on my TiBook G4, and all
kernels >2.6.34 hang on boot with KMS enabled by default.
