i  've found where is the problem.
on kernel >= 2.6.22.x  you must have compiled in:

Device Drivers --->
<*> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support --->
[*]legacy /proc/ide/ support
 
this means that you need  CONFIG_IDE_PROC_FS=y
Btw, we are using yaboot-1.3.14 and a modern toolchain.
