We just tested booting of FAT using OF to read and it seemed to work fine:

boot /vdevice/v-scsi at 30000002/disk at 8100000000000000:1,yaboot.new
conf=/vdevice/v-scsi at 30000002/disk at 8100000000000000:1,yaboot.cnf

Leo is working on a patch to ensure that we can get the right conf name.
