Code cleanups/refactorings

Hi there,

As I said in a previous email, we are going to use Patchwork in Linaro
but some of our use cases require changes to Patchwork. I've already
proposed a few ones here but there are others which are more involved
and I realized cleaning up (and/or refactoring) some code would make it
a lot easier to do them.

I think those cleanups/refactorings are beneficial by themselves as they
should make Patchwork easier to change/extend, so I've been proposing
them (as patches) on this mailing list. However, I didn't get any
feedback on them, and although I hope this is because people are just
busy with other stuff, I'm left wondering if there's any interest in
such changes.

Cheers,
