So, this is the third or so variant of this, and
I know that Becky has an essentially identical patch
queued up here to go out as well, and all.

Paul, any chance that we can set up a "merge tree"
that contains a good working basis for these patches
so that we can make some forward progress while waiting
for some upstream commits to take place?
