hi Sridhar,
Thanks for the advice but it does not work :-( I still have the infamous '
undefined symbol: zmq_strerror;' message

I have seen similar problem when loading modules under Python2.7 if Python
3 is also installed. This is what I did
python2 -m pip install ipykernel
python2 -m ipykernel install --user
point PYTHONPATH to appropriate location
restart jupyter, After which I was able to run notebook without any issues
