port ppc to linux

hi everybody
i  have taken a a ppc kernel source taken from
ppckernel.org
it is one of the paulus kernels,
for powerpc MPC860 made by Motorola running on FADS
board..
if i write the initialisations ..
and then compile the kernel as an elf.
port it to the fads board...
would it be running or would i require debian
ditribution or some other things..
kindly clarify..
