Communicating to a FADS 823 board

I am trying to connect to a FADS 823 board from Motorola. I have looked at
Graham's PPC embedded HowTo's. But I still am not able to figure out how to
interface to the board from my Linux box. I have been able to use the Debug
port using SDS Diab on Windows. But I want to be able to do it on a Linux
box. The serial port and the ethernet port LED's are not lit up. I am still
very confused. I am very new to embedded work, so please help.
