Good development machine.

I was pondering getting an iMac for development. Then
i heard that it doesn't have floppy nor serial. So now
i am asking what would be a good development machine?
good is ofcourse cheap and working :) What do you 
guys use instead of cross-compliing on ix86 and sparc?

Not enough dough to buy 5k$ Mac.
