zImage bootfloppy won't load a ramdisk floppy

After the short discussion on LinuxPPC-2000 and support for the
IBM RS/6000 43P 7248 (Carolina) on the workstation list, I've
decided to try to get the X installer to work on the 7248 by making a
new bootimage and hacking a bit on the install scripts, and add the
frame
buffer X-server from a floppy. I guess this should not be too difficult.
Making this to work would be valuable for all the carolina based IBM's
around.

But I've stranded on something that might not be too difficult for some
kernel gurus or any other to answer:

I've made a zImage, and it boots from floppy like a dream with the Frame
Buffer, Tux in the upper corner, and everything. I want to use the
floppy ramdisk image from the LinuxPPC-2000 install, and add
these kernel parameters:

root=/dev/fd0 ramdisk_size=8291 load_ramdisk=1

I have made ramdisk floppies from the ramdisk image on the CD, and know
they work, 'cause they load with the old R5 2.2.10 bootimage kernel.
But when booting with the new 2.2.16pre1 kernel, it hangs at
"RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0"
and the floppy light stays lit forever.

The compiled kernel works great when mounting root from a hard drive.

I guess I have forgotten something in the kernel config, but I can't
find
what it is.

Hmmm. I have now compiled five or more kernels today. I guess I'm lucky
who have a cross compiler on a dual pentium III 500MHz Dell server :-)

I attach the kernel config file. The sources are the 2.2.15 tree
from ftp.kernel.org, with Alan's 2.2.16pre1 patch (the pre2 won't
compile),
and David Monroes Carolina and IBM_E15 patches. I think none of
these patches make changes to the kernel ramdisk code.

I've got the same results with all kernels I've compiled myself in the
2.2 series.

Any suggestions would be nice
