segfault in sndvolmix/libc?

i hope this hasn't been posted already; i didn't see it if it was.  running
R5 (or Q3 or 1999 or whatever the bloody hell...) on a powerbook G3 lombard
333; sndvolmix dies with a segfault regardless of arguments.  here's the 
cut + paste:

looks to be an issue with libc.  it's the stock libc package that comes with 
R5, glibc-2.1.1-6c.  anyone else seen this?
