PK-File-Format (metafont) Documentation

Anybody knows where the PK-file-format is documented?\
I see that the GF-format is documented in Knuth's\
metafont-book. But the PK-format, I don't see it (do I\
have an out-dated version??). Is there something like a\
documentation available (online?)?
