First, during bootup of Etch standard setup
(debian-40r1-i386-netinst.iso):

	Setting the system clock..
	hwclock[1826] general protection eip:804aacb esp:bf80d094 error:0
	/etc/rcS.d/S11hwclock.sh: line 48: 1826 Segmentation fault
	/sbin/hwclock --hctosys $GMT $HWCLOCKPARS $BADYEAR

And after crond startup it stops and does nothing, no cpu consumed.

	INIT: Entering runlevel: 2
	Starting system log daemon: syslogd.
	Starting kernel log daemon: klogd.
	* Not starting internet superserver: no services enabled.
	Starting periodic command scheduler: crond.

kernel version is 2.6.23-rc5-b21010ed6498391c0f359f2a89c907533fe07fec
