Gunnar,
For questions 1 and 4, I think the best firmware is earlier 2.0,
because it allows limited RSX access using Iron Peter's "libps3rsx";
For 2, the 3.x versions is the least usage on memory space;
Answering your number 3 question, I think the version 2.10 and later
fix some major bugs such as wifi and bluetooth for sixaxis control,
but you loses the RSX access through hack;
And for 5, I like the forums.ps2dev.org for discussion on PS3 Linux matters.
