I should have mentioned that I did read the README, and tried those configure
flags, but still obtained the same error.

Anyway, I hadn't noticed the rpms though. That went fine, so all is well:

get ftp://ftp.infradead.org/pub/Sony-PS3/mars/latest/mars-1.1.4-1.ppc.rpm
rpm -ivh mars-1.1.4-1.ppc.rpm
