You should be able to do that.  I guess you built them incorrectly.

You need to build with OpenWRT, or at least link with libs built
from it.  Maybe the openwrt-devel mailing list is a better place
to ask?

It is/does that.  Just exit to the shell and you can run any of the
programs built into the rom image.

I'm not sure if everything is there for chroot to work.  You'll at
least need to run '/etc/inid.d/petitboot stop' to get pb-discover
to unmount everything.
