Hi,

I made the same mistake to go that route too: build the kernel directly from kernel.org. The thing is the build process for Ubuntu is quite different from the generic kernel; also there are lots of settings/feature selections the Ubuntu team (and PS3 Ubuntu teeam) already configured and tested, which is not trival to do to say the least. 

I then switch to the Ubuntu repository and things get much easier. Specifically, I started with Dan Munckton's branch [0], and following
Dan's instruction [1], to do a build without any change. The result is a installable deb package, identical to Dan's test build[2] (although I didn't get strictly 

the same deb package, maybe due to difference in gcc, clib etc). Test the build to make sure it works as Dan's build.

Then I patch the patches I wanted (in my case, WOL patches) either through patch or manually. The result: I got a working kernel with WOL.

If there is a need, I may write a step-by-step tutorial on my experience on psubunut.com forum.

    Hi the kernel that is in the latest PS3 Linux distro kit is v2.6.25. 
Geoff has some patches for kernel 2.6.26 on his space on kernel.org but I am 
not sure on how to apply the patches to bring the kernel up to v2.6.26. I 
tried to build my own v2.6.26 kernel once I believe but it did not work as 
my system did not boot after I installed it and updated my /etc/kboot.conf 
file to reflect the new kernel. I was tinkering with the kernel settings 
before I compiled it so maybe I messed up some setting in the process. Maybe 
Geoff could answer the question of whether or now the 2.6.26 works on he PS3 
yet or not. He could also be working on a PS3 Linux distro that has the 
2.6.26 kernel but I am not sure of that.
