I'm happy to change the name of the make variable, but I'm at a loss as 
to what the new name should be :)

Sure, but the "default loader" isn't a binary that runs on the SPE.

I think _ld_ implies a dynamic loader (ie, ld.so). Something like
"spelibexecdir"?
