WoL support was introduced by

    Add Wake-on-LAN support to the PS3 Gelic network driver.
    Other OS WOL support was introduced in PS3 system firmware 2.20.

So you need 2.6.26 (or an earlier kernel with the appropriate PS3 patches, of
course).

Yes, that should work. And it's not non-reversible, if you install it next to
the current kernel.
