Hmm, ppu-as --version gives:

     GNU assembler 2.16.1 (CELL 3-2, Apr 11 2006)

So yes, this has high chances of being the problem.

Where do I get a newer version?  (2.16.91.x sounds like a development  
one, isn't it?)
Is it available as RPM packages for easy installation?
